I really enjoyed this book because it was easy for me to relate to it. A boy in high school attempting to win a starting spot on his school's football team is really entertaining. The fact that Marcus was trying to take the spot of the star player on the team, which was the plot of the story, really made me want to keep reading this book.

As soon as I stated reading this book, I realized that it would be interesting. It deals with a teenage boy who is trying to win the starting quarterback position on his school's football team. Marcus eventually meets a man in the park who is an ex-professional football player who teaches him the game. Later on in the story you find out that the man who is helping Marcus, the main character of the story, is really the father of his number one rival, Troy. Troy is the starting quarterback of the school's football team, and Marcus is trying to overtake his spot.

I enjoyed the book POP because it was about a football story. The book had a good plot and a lot of action was in the book. Marcus and Troy made this a very good book. Troy had some problems and now I understand why he didn't want to talk about some things.

I think that in real life, the Popovich family should have told people about Charlie's condition. They could have made a charity to make the future better and have the NFL protect against concousions. Telling the public can only help, not hurt.

I think that Troy should have supported Marcus. The team is a familly that needs everyone to succeed. If someone is not wanted to succeed, they never will. If nobody competed, everyone would cooperate and succeed.

I'm not sure whether or not Gordan Korman ever played high school football or not, but in reality no dedicated starting varsity football player would ever miss a game to help a grown man he only knew for a few months. Especially since the game was so important to the team, if it were me I wouldn't have missed it if the moon was about to crash into the Earth. So Charlies few moments of happiness at the hall of fame ceremony shouldn't have been Marcus' priority.

I found it very interesting that Marcus didn't realize that Charlie had something wrong with him before he did, I found it pretty obvious something was wrong with Charlie. At the same time i think its odd that Marcus was so easily able to figure out that Charlie thought Marcus was James McTavish. I would never see Mac from McTavish that easily.

The end of the novel was very sad. I knew that Charlie was going to die throughout the whole book. You saw how his disease was getting worse and worse as the book went on and it was hard to watch him die especially when you can relate to it. Although, Charlie died he inspired me as a person.

The book Pop was a great overall book that I would recommend to others. The book also had some flaws. I didn't understand why Charlie's family wasn't on top of him when they knew he had Alzheimers. If I were his parents, I would not let him have the freedom he was getting. Otherwise, the book had great flow and made me what to read more.

Troy quits football.. And Marcus starts over him in the championship game and DUring the game he sees Charlie like back in college he was climbing the bleachers and falls to his death and they lose the final game. The funeral was a sad one and Troy and Alyssa get ba together. At the end of the book i was sad because of the not happy ending of Charles.
Tho book was a heartwarming story about Marcusi and Charlie. Marcus just moves Into a new town and he is lonely but determined to be a football star. While practicing he meets an older guy named Charlie.. With the help of Charlie Marcus improves his game. Marcus is curious about Charlie and has a rivalry/competition with Troy the starting quarterback. Matt Mendiola

This novel turned out to be very predictable. It was very easy to tell that something was wrong with Charlie. Also it was extremely easy to tell something bad was going to happen to Charlie. I wondered throughout the whole novel why Charlie's family didn't keep a close eye on him. In the end that was what got him killed. I thought that if the novel was a little more vague about Charlie it could have been much less predictable and could have been a much better book.

Noticing how much Alzheimer's can effect a person changed the outcome of this book. I really wanted Charlie's football team to get two perfect seasons in the story, but that didn't happen. There were also to many confusing moments in the story. Overall I thought this book was great to read for summer reading, if wasn't as predictable as it was it would of been much better than it was.

I enjoyed this book because it was very interesting to read. The only disappointment this book had was when Charlie died at the end story, and it was a disappointment because his death was obvious throughout the book. Charlie's death was sad because he fell off bleachers and it ended a great book. Also, Charlie having Alzheimer's had a great effect on the book because if he didn't have this disease the storyline would of totally been changed.

When Marcus first moved to the town he was trying to get on the football team. The team had won the championship the year before and didn't want to mess the team up. The players didn't want him there. He was trying for the position of Quarter Back but that was Troy's position. He later than gets better and plays Quarter Back in some games.

In the beginning, the plot was kind of confusing. Toward the end it all was understanding. Charlie was always at the park practicing with Marcus. It was obvious that Charlie had Alzheimer's and his family didn't do anything till the end. This cause him to pass away.

I really enjoyed the book except when Charlie died at the end. There were a lot of twists that left me thinking and the book was just well layed out. Although there were things that I didn't understand such as why Marcus put himself in danger by going to the football field when Charlie was there or why he would take the blame for Charlie I still think that overall, the book was good.

I am glad that a sports themed book was put on the Summer Reading List this year. From the beginning this book caught my eye because the author, Gordon Korman, made it interesting plus the added bonus that it is easy to relate to, considering that I am also a high school student. However, I thought that this book was going to be your average sports book where there is one main character that comes out on top. To my surprise though, there was more to this book than just someone always winning. There were also lessons about practice, friendship and dedication woven throughout the text.
Changing Hearts
At the start when Marcus first tried out for the football team Troy Popovich son of Charlie Popovich, retired NFL player, saw Marcus as a threat. Trying to steal his spot as the star football player on the high school football team. Practicing with Troy's father first enraged Troy. Then he threatened Marcus. Then when Charlie was going to be inducted into the Football Hall of Fame for college athletes Charlie's family wouldn't let him go, but Marcus thought it was right to allow Charlie to be rewarded for his hard work. So he took Charlie to the induction without consent from his family and he was arrested. This was the turning point. Troy realized along with the rest of his family that Marcus was only trying help and this is how they eventually became friends rather than rivals.
Kyle L Final Blog
The ending of Pop was very exciting but sad. It was exciting because of all the changes instoryline like Troy quitting football and Alyssa and Troy getting back together . when Charlie died it was devastating to both Popovich family and to Marcus . For the Popovich family they lost a father and husband and to Marcus he lost a friend. I liked the way Gordan Korman created all the conflicts between Marcus , Troy and Troys sister. The conflicts consisted of Football , whats best for Charlie and Alyssa. The only thing I didnt like was that he killed charlie and how marcus could even be able to take Charlie to EBU and not get caught or even transport him there since hes a teenager.
Don't Judge on Appearances
Everyone thought that Troy Popovich had it made. His father was a retired NFL player, he was the star player on his high school football team, and he had a beautiful girlfriend. When the truth was that all him and his family worried about was his father and his worsening illness. Everyone saw Troy as man who had everything going right but in Troy's eyes everything was going wrong. That's why you can't judge people by what their lives look like. Everything may look like it's going well but everything could be going downhill.

I thought this book had a very good ending, although it was sad it showed how serious Alzheimer's is. The ending was also very ironic because Charlie's life ended where it pretty much started on the football field.

This book was really good. I usually hate reading but this book was actually good. Gordon Korman is a really good author. I like how it wasn't all about football. Like it was about friendship and this book also taught lessons like how far you can go with hard work and practice. If you set your mind to a goal with hard work you will accomplish it. I am definitely reading more books by this author.

This book really surprised me, Like when Marcus brought Charlie to a game at EBU to help him out even though he would get in more trouble. Even though he helped him out, he made a big mistake. I don't understand why he would do that even if he was getting taught by a former NFL player. He almost got Marcus arrested by the police.

Once I saw that there was a sports book available for our summer reading assignment, I immediately purchased that book. I can relate to this book because I am a high school student that plays football. Marcus is competing for the starting quarterback job against Troy. Charlie is trying to prove himself to his coaches that he can become a starter. Usually in sports books the main character always gets the starting job.

Hey there, just finishing the book
and I have to say despite Charlie’s death I like this book. That must really
stink how this happens during a football game. Before Charlie’s death near the
end I thought it was really good that Marcus would actually contact one of Charlie’s
old friend and teammate. That shows how much he cares about “The King of Pop”.
Overall I thought this was a very good book and I would definitely recommend
this to a friend. But I can’t because all my friends have already read it.

I read the book Pop by Gordan Korman for my summer reading assignment. This was a good book for me because I play football in high school and that is what this book was about. The book Pop has been pretty good so far. I really didn't think it was going to be good but it has surprised me. Marcus brought Charlie to a game at EBU to help him out even though he would wind up to get in trouble. Even though he helped him out, he made a huge mistake. Marcus should have told real Mac that Charlie wasn't really supposed to be at the game. If Mac knew that Charlie was going to be at the game he would've been able to stop Charlie from running away and prevent Charlie from running away and almost getting Marcus arrested.

I never realized how serious alzheimer's was until I read this book. I always thought that you just forgot minor things here and there, but I never thought that it could kill someone. I really was shocked when Charlie died because of his disease, and I never thought it could get that serious. Throughout the whole book Charlie forgot minor things, like the store owners name, or when he thought he was still a teenager, but I never thought it would lead to him falling off the bleachers at a football game and dying. It was a sad ending to the book POP, but it was a good lesson for me to learn, and that was to never take any kind of disease lightly. Now I see why Troy wanted to keep Charlie's disease a secret throughout the whole book.

I really did enjoy the book POP by Gordon Korman. It was interesting to see how Troy's father, Charlie, helped his enemy Marcus to become such a great football player. Even though Charlie helped Marcus so much with football, if I was Marcus I would have just walked away from the situation the first time Charlie poped him. Even if I did keep practicing with Charlie, I would have been creeped out by all the things he was doing because I didn't know he had alzheimer's yet. I just question the decision making of Marcus through out the book.

The book was a little confusing at the beginning with the characters of Marcus and Charlie. I didn't know what the plot was towards the beginning. Charlie walked up to Marcus who is the new kid in town and wants to be the starting quarterback. It is interesting how Troy's father would help out Marcus.

Pop was a very good option for summer reading becasue it is a novel about sports with constant plot change that keeps the readers attention . The story begins with a teenager named Marcus moving to a new town so his mother could work for the local newspaper . Also while moving he avoids his father who divorced his mom and has only been referred to as "Comrade Stalin" because he wasnt a good father. While Marcus doesnt know anyone yet he rides his vespa to Three Alarm Park to practice football so he can hopefully make the new high school he is attending. While practicing alone in the park he meets an older muscular man named charlie. Charlie starts to practice with him and Marcus notices he is still very athletic for his age . Marcus learns alot from charlie and gets much better by each session . Marcus then has competion with Troy for his starting qb job and for his girlfriend Alyssa which causes problems . During football season the coach dosent want problems because it can affect the way they preform in the game and put their second undefeated season in jeoparody. So far I have enjoyed reading the book because I can relate and understand the sports competitive nature.

Charlie begins to practice with Marcus who wants to earn the starting quarterback position on the high school team, over Troy. This book is a good read because its about a boy in high school and my peers and i can relate to Charlie. Im going to guess that Marcus gets the starting position because the main characters always succeed.

The book Pop was very interesting, and I liked how some of the things in it could actually happen. The action and clues during the book made me want to continue reading and see what was going to happen. An example is when Charlie kept calling Marcus "Mac", and Marcus kept saying "My name is Marcus" but Charlie never remembered and kept calling him Mac. Then we finally found out that Charlie had Alzheimer's. Another cliff hanger was in the beginning of the book when Charlie and Marcus started practicing, and Charlie was very good. And then we found out the Charlie played in the NFL as a linebacker. I would definitely recommend this book to someone who likes sports, and wants to read a good and well written book.

At first it did not make sense that Charlie, a Grown man, was out at a park in the middle of the day playing football with a teenager that he has never met before. Also Charlie referred to Marcus at an old friend and always wanted to be playing football or trashing "Old man Dingley's" place. Then, toward to middle and end of the book all the loose ends stared to get tied up and make sense. The book turned out to end very well with all its unexpected twists throughout the whole book.

The end of the book is very sad. I don't think it was necessary for Gordon Korman to kill Charlie in the book. When I started to look at the book, I got to understand the meaning and what the book will be about. When I saw that the book is about a kid in high school who plays football, it got my attention. Marcus might be the main character because he is trying to get the starting job at the quarterback position. Marcus is trying to win the job from Troy who was last years quarterback. Marcus will need to overcome the things in his path to try to win the job. I am hoping this will be a book I like.

Right off the bat Gordan Korman made this book interesting and what made it even better was that it was about a teenage boy who is in high school which makes it very easy for myself and my peers to relate to. In this case Marcus is the main character who is trying to gain a starting spot on his school's football team as a quarterback however there is a huge obstacle in the way of him achieving that, the previous starter, Troy. I am really hoping that this book is not like the other sports books I've read before where the main character ALWAYS wins. Maybe this read will incorporate some twists as the plot develops.

The end of the book really threw me for a loop and made me feel for Troy even though he had been rude towards Marcus. even though I initially despised of Troy, I felt bad for him at the end because he and his family were finally beginning to understand Charlie more due to Marcus and all this progress was cut short by his tragic death. I finally began to understand why Troy was so uptight and protective when it came to talking about his father and Marcus help open up Troy when discussing his father. Marcus might have been the best thing to happen to Charlie post-alztheimers but it ultimately led to his demise which put a lot of guilt on Marcus. Even though Marcus led the Popovich family to a new understanding of Charlie and his disease, not only did it open up each of their minds, it led to one of the best days of Charlie's life.

The book Pop was not one of my most favorite books. The first few chapters did not grab me and did not interest me to read more but of course I did. the rest of Pop was much more interesting then the beginning because there was more action and it moved the story along. especially with the football parts of the story. I believe that the most interesting parts of this book was finding more about Charlie Popovich.

Pop was interesting from the get go of the novel. Most books are generally a bit slow and drawn out in the beginning of the book, but Korman wastes no time before jumping into the interesting content. It stars off with Marcus practicing for the football tryouts in three alarm park, and right away, Charlie comes running in and changes everything. Immediately questions are raised about the mysterious and intriguing character. As the book progresses, there is always something going on to keep the pace of the book fast and interesting whether it be practicing with Charlie in three alarm park, playing in football games, or getting in trouble with officer Deluca. Then the plot thickens when Marcus discovers the secret about Charlie Popovich having Alzheimer's and risks everything to take him to his college hall of fame induction. Throughout the whole novel, Korman grabs the reader's attention and only tightens his grip until the very end.

This book is alright so far. Some parts I do not get, like why Charlie doesn't pay for things or forgets to train with Marcus. I think it is because he has brain damage, since he played in the NFL for so many years. I assume that Marcus isn't being treated fairly on the football team? Is it because he has to prove himself to them. Finally Troy and Chelsea are worried about there father but why now he wondered off all the time and they didn't seem to care, only because he was with Marcus. Troy and Chelsea are very protective of their father why, he is a grown man.

During the trip with EBU with Mac, Marcus, and Charlie, Mac and Marcus had the idea try to make Charlie feel safe by talking about his old college days as they get further away from the things he is used to see. It kind of back fired though. It ended up making Charlie uncomfortable. He then runs away when they stop at a truck shop to eat. Then Mac and Marcus find him in the middle of the street and bring him to EBU. I don't get why Charlie decided to run away rather than just asking them to stop. He didn't have to take such drastic measures then forcing Mac and Marcus having to go and find him wandering the streets.

In the beginning of the novel, I thought that it started out like any other book does, but it happened to progress and a relationship was formed between two characters that i had never seen before. With a combination of an ex-NFL player and a kid entering his junior year in high school, the tandem of Marcus Jordan and Charlie Popovich was one that was unexpected. At first I was a bit concerned about how the two would be able to have a relationship being that it's not everyday that a man in his fifties played football and hung out with a kid who was sixteen. But, as the story progressed and Marcus began to learn more about Charlie and his disease, he began to understand why Charlie acted the way he did which made the two of them good friends. By the end of the book, Marcus was able to predict some of Charlie's actions which helped save his life, but ultimately he couldn't prevent the experience which happened at the end of the novel. Overall, Marcus and Charlie's relationship was able one that had an odd beginning and a sad and regretful ending.

I find the relationship between Marcus and Charlie one sided because Charlie has his knowledge from experience in the NFL to hand over to Marcus to help him through high school football. But Marcus doesn't have anything as far as football that could benefit Charlie because he is less experienced and is still learning the skills of the game.

The development of the characters in this novel is very interesting. I was somewhat confused when Charlie would do something to get them in trouble and then run away. Then I started to realize that there was something wrong with Charlie. I knew before I read this book about how many concussions can cause dimensia, Alzheimer's and many other diseases and problems. I was suprised that Charlie didn't severely injure Marcus because Marcus wasn't used to such of a force hitting him. I thought it was cool that Charlie and Marcus developed such a friendship that he was able to find him when he was lost the night of the party. Hopefully during the rest of the book some of the confusing parts will be sorted out and maybe it will suprise me because the novel is very predictable at this point of the story.

Pop was an interesting and fast paced novel that surprised me in a lot of ways. When Marcus decided to risk everything and take Charlie to his college hall of fame induction, I thought Marcus was in way over his head and was making very poor choices especially since he had been in trouble with the police a couple times recently before. However, Marcus didn't really suffer a harsh consequence like I thought he would. Although I am happy everything ended up working out for Marcus in the end, I thought it was a bit unrealistic that nothing bad ended up happening to Marcus because what he did was incredibly risky and dangerous.

The friendship that was developed between Marcus and Charlie was my favorite aspect of this novel. Some may say that the friendship was mostly one sided but I believe that Marcus and Charlie both benefited from this friendship. Charlie taught Marcus more than I think he realized. The obvious part was Charlie taught Marcus how to tackle and play football hard. Marcus was able to play on the football team as left corner back and fullback. The last game of the season he was able to play quarterback. Charlie also taught Marcus compassion, loyalty, perseverance, and dedication. These qualities were taught to Marcus as Marcus was becoming Charlie's friend. Marcus needed all these qualities in order to help Charlie cope with his disease. Marcus cared about Charlie's feelings which was shown when Marcus persevered to get Charlie to the Hall of Fame game. Marcus was loyal to Charlie by not telling Officer Deluca the real reasons why Mr. Oliver experienced all the problems at his store. These are just some of the examples that demonstrate these qualities that Marcus learned. Charlie was lucky that he met Marcus that day at the park. Marcus made Charlie's life easier and opened the eyes of Charlie's family on ways they could help Charlie deal with Alzheimers. Even though there was a significant difference in their age, they developed a true friendship that any of us would be lucky to have. DanielG10

Since Charlie Popovich played in the NFL as a linebacker, I am predicting that he will help Marcus with his football skills. This help will have an end result of Marcus taking the spot as the starting quarterback. Since Charlie and Troy are father and son, I feel as though this will cause tension between Troy and Marcus. I think that Troy will get angry because his own father is helping another quarterback, that could potentially take his sons spot. So far this book is very interesting, and is very well written.

Let it be known that I do not play football, nor do I have any idea how it is played. For this reason I hoped Pop would educate me in this realm. A another factor in my decision to enjoy Pop was my previous experience of enjoyment of Gordan Korman's works. The book did enlighten me of football, but i found the author's writing style more interesting. The writing style of Korman is at times suspenseful An example of his suspense in writing is found on the last page of Chapter 27. Charlie is climbing on the rail surrounding the bleachers at a football game, Korman writes about the main character Marcus; "Marcus closed his eyes in silent prayer, just for an instant. And when he opened them again, Charlie Popovich was gone". The reader does not know what happened to Charlie, urging them to read the next chapter. I had planned to stop my reading for the moment after i finished this chapter. This suspense made me read the next chapter at the moment.

I found the characters very interesting(Marcus and Charlie) so far but the plot is kind of confusing. I am hoping as I read further the author will explain things better.
DanielG10firstpost
I always wonder where the author comes up with the title of a book. Usually the reader finds out the title and the meaning of the title somewhere in the middle of the book. Gordon Korman decided to reveal the reason why he titled his book Pop in the first few pages of the novel. Charlie, a former NFL football player, tackled Marcus, a high school football player who just moved to a new town, and as Marcus was trying to recuperate from the tackle, Charlie was screaming "I love the pop! Sometimes you actually hear it go pop!" This title has significant meaning. Charlie Popovich became known as the King of Pop. His last name abbreviated spells pop but also the way he defended on the football field, one could usually hear the pop of the two players. The continuous pops that Charlie received and caused as a professional football player is what causes him to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. This disease is the main focal point of the novel. The novel shows the reader what continuous head trauma injuries/concussions can lead to and the unfortunate symptoms/prognosis of the disease. The title continues to make the reader think that every pop that Charlie received during his football career caused him to get this horrible disease. DanielG10

the ending of the book was predictable. because when Marcus got the starting position it was to predictable I think that u should of let the other player start and something bad happens to him like get hurt on a sack or bad grades or any thing that would make the ending less predictable
Second post
It was hard to understand how a grown man did not suspect anything odd that Marcus was bringing Charlie to the celebration instead of his own family. This whole part of the book was improbable. How would the real Mac not think that Charlie's own family, would let Marcus bring Charlie to the biggest achievement of his life, instead of them.
First Post
In the beginning of Pop by Gordon Korman, the lead character, Marcus, is moved to a new town, and has to deal with all the challenges that come with being the "new kid". The most crucial for him, is being welcomed into the football team which isn't the easiest task considering he is trying to start over the star quarterback, who had a perfect season the previous year. This was an interesting start to a book and, it leaves the reader curious to how it will develop into a full story.

i love this book
I love the book Pop because it is funny. I thought it was funny because I love the way they practice. for some reason it was funny to me. I also loved this book because I love football and I understood what the coaches where saying. those are some of many reasons I love this book.
I recommend this book to people who love books and love to have a good read.

Second Half (Chapters 15-End)
After a short ride on his Vespa, Marcus arrives at eighty-five Colonnade way in Coltrane. This is the workplace of the man Charlie thought Marcus was, Mac. Marcus went in and explained his unique situation to Mac and how it involved him. Mac understood him and agreed to help however he could. Outside of Charlie, Marcus had continued his success in football and had earned a spot on the team, though not where he wanted. He had started to realize Troy had not only been avoiding contact he was terrified of it. A light hit had him on the sideline for several plays because of this fear. No matter how hard he worked, it looked he was never going to become the starting quarterback. The time of Charlie's hall of fame induction was arriving soon and Marcus had finally been able to have a mostly consistent idea of Charlie's schedule. Marcus had chosen that despite Charlie's family, he would take him to the induction. When the time of the plan was upon them and after some panic, he and Charlie were ready for Mac to get them. After hearing "the old Charlie" as Mac put it, speak at the induction ceremony Marcus knew the risks he took were worth it. That was until Charlie had gotten away from them and been taken in by the police. The only thing that saved Marcus, at least for the time was Troy being injured at the very important Poughkeepsie West game. Marcus had managed to win the game and ultimately de-throne Troy. Charlie's speech, however, had truly woken up Charlie's wife about how bad his condition and they signed Charlie up to be put into a retirement home for his own safety. Despite this, at the final game of the season, Charlie took his last steps. While reliving an old memory and prank he fell off the back of the bleachers to his death. this came as a shock to me and I'm sure to everyone else. I had come to feel like I knew Charlie and could have never anticipated such an abrupt ending to such a great life.
Second Post
All of the challenges Marcus faced throughout the book kept it interesting and made me want to keep reading, like when he loses Charlie at the game, or getting in trouble with the police all the time. The book was very fast paced and never got boring. I enjoyed reading it.
First Post
I thought that Charlie was going to only show up that one time when Marcus was playing alone, but when he kept coming back i was confused because the author wouldn't say who it was or what his significance was in the story. That kept me interested for most of the beginning of the book.

beginning of book
I was surprised that Charlie left Marcus with the car payments. A typical adult would not leave a child with that responsibility. They were both there when it happened and were both involved with the window breaking so they should have split the blame, if not Charlie should have taken full responsibility. He also planned a revenge prank on the owner of the car. An adult would not usually do something like that especially when it was his and Marcus' fault. He alwasys forgets promises and acts as if they never made any.
First Blog
I never got why Marcus even started to practice for Foot Ball with Charlie, why would anyone just start to play Foot Ball with a random man but if he didn't there wouldn't be a story I just wish they would have proposed a different idea
Second Half of the Book
When Charlie was inaugurated into the East Bonaventure Hall of Fame, I didn't know what to think. Marcus knew that Charlie deserves this achievement. On the other hand, I also thought about how Charlie would react to being at his old college. I was not expecting him to be to able walk up to the stand and say a short speech. It was also shocking to me that the cop let Marcus go to the football game and finish out the game. This event would never happen in my town. The town doesn't revolve around football. I find it a little unrealistic that Marcus ran off the field in the middle of the game just because he saw Charlie walking up the stairs on the bleachers. I find it hard to believe that he was focusing on the game and on Charlie.
Sunday, August 4, 2013
A part that stuck out to me was during another practice session with Charlie, Marcus’ shoulder gets seriously
injured and Charlie left him hanging after promising to come back. Ever
since the incident, Marcus decides he has had enough with Charlie and that he
does not want anything to do with Charlie anymore. I agreed with Marcus' decision to be done with Charlie.

During the novel I didn't understand why Marcus just went along with Charlie sugaring the hardware store and didn't try to stop him and tell him that what he was doing was wrong. Partially because of this Marcus becomes a delinquent when really he should not have. Marcus was always a good kid in his old town so it didn't make sense for him to be doing something like that.
Second Post
The ending of the book was predictable and unpredictable at the same time. When Marcus got the starting quarterback position it was predictable. But I was confused when Marcus got hit hard by the huge kid, I assumed that Marcus was going to wake up in the hospital but he ended up waking up still on the field. When Troy quiet football, and when Charlie fell to his death, I was shocked because it was unpredictable to me. Overall the book was a great read and it showed how one hit could change any one's life for ever.

So far I've enjoyed reading POP, because its been very unpredictable and interesting. The main character Marcus seems to be a normal kid who wants to just fit in with everyone else in the new town he moved to. One confusing part for me right now is I really don't understand who this Stalin character is, besides that this book is a good and easy read.

first post
I chose Pop for my summer reading activity because it seemed the most interesting book out of the choices. After reading the novel, what I found most interesting was how a young high school player met and practiced with a retired star in the NFL. I thought this was very cool because playing Lacrosse with a professional athlete is one of my dreams. I think I would learn a lot from the pro because he is very experienced and could tell me what I'm doing wrong. Another good part of the book is when Marcus realizes that Charlie is Troy's father. This caught me by surprise and I definitely was not expecting it.
second post
In the second half of the book, we find out that Charlie was a professional football player. He also had played in college and he was a linebacker. As the players get bigger and stronger the hits get more devastating. Each hit would increase a football player's chance of getting Alzheimer's. We also find out that Charlie is supposed to be inaugurated into his college's hall of fame. This is where a stroke of luck hits Marcus. After Marcus takes Charlie to the Hall of Fame. Marcus goes to the Raider's game. When Charlie and Marcus arrive at the Raider's game, Marcus finds out that Troy Popovich had hurt his hand. Troy was the starting Quarterback of the Raider's and Charlie's son.The Raider's want to keep their win streak alive, and eventually they end up keeping their win streak as the Raider's win 17-14 with Marcus as the QB.Marcus's good luck quickly spiraled downhill when Charlie thinks he is a teenager again. He climbs to the top of the stadium and loses balance, falling off the top and downwards to his death. This death was being foreshadowed in this book because his Alzheimer's was getting more effective everyday. Sooner or later his entire memory would be erased. But the death that he had here was sad but predictable.
Beginning of the book
The book that I am reading is Pop by Gordon Korman. I am posting about the first half of the book. In the book so far Marcus is a new kid that practices playing football in the local park everyday. Then one day while Marcus is playing football he notices that someone in particular keeps on showing up in the park. It is Charlie. Charlie has gave Marcus some problems in the past, but since Charlie has Alzheimer's, Marcus couldn't reveal the truth to anyone because everyone would find out. In my opinion if I was Marcus, I would tell everyone. It's better to share your feelings then to bottle them in. Plus, he's getting punished and receiving consequences for stuff that he did not even do. Marcus also starts to realize that Charlie keeps calling him, Mac. Mac isn't a nickname for Marcus, but it was Charlie's best friend from his childhood that Charlie believes is still alive. I think that this was like a foreshadow. That the real Mac will sooner or later appear in the book.

JackM10, Final Post
The ending of the book was unpredictable I thought. Charlie falling off the top of the stands was something that no one would have thought of. Then again he did have a condition in which made him forget who other people are, and where he is. Marcus attending his funeral and going back to the Popivich house showed a lot of respect. Lastly, Marcus doing what he did with Charlie and the friendship they had together I think wasn't a bad thing.

Second
Through the later chapters of this book, friendship becomes a major theme. But it is mostly a one-sided friendship because Marcus does most of the giving and Charlie does most of the receiving even though he doesn't know what is good for him. When Marcus and Charlie go to the Hall of Fame, that really shows that Marcus cares for Charlie deeply. I was really surprised when the police took Marcus, but instead of going to the police station, they went to the football game. This book is alright because nothing really interests me to much.
Response about the book
Overall, the book Pop was good because it had a lot of meaning. My favorite part was in the beginning when they met because you would not think of that ever happening. My least favorite part was when they got me confused. I am not sure troy is Charlie's son or not. I would suggest this book to a reader who likes sport books.

When Marcus brought Charlie to East "Bumwipe" for the hall of fame awards ceremony, I think it was the right choice. You could tell that Charlie knew exactly what he was doing. And also when he died. Did anyone notice that he knew exactly what he was doing and what was wrong with himself? Marcus says that he could see the same old Charlie in his eyes. The family didn't know that, but Marcus did, and he respected Charlie for that.
Chapter 23-24
A second interesting plot in the book Pop by Gordon Korman happened in the chapters of 23 and 24. In chapter 23 Marcus ends up bringing Charlie to the Hall of Fame at East Bonaventure University. On their way back from the University officer Deluca ends up pulling them over and telling Marcus to get in his car because the Raiders need him to play in the game for Troy. Marcus will not be arrested for any of the gags he played in the beginning of the book with Charlie and the Popovich's are happy for Marcus bringing Charlie to the homecoming at East Bonaventure University. In chapter 24 Marcus was given a chance to play QB and the Raiders ended up winning the game 17 to 14 keeping a winning streak alive.
Chapter 17
Throughout the book Pop by Gordon Korman there were many interesting plots that capture my eye. One in particular was in chapter 17 where Marcus is getting to know Charlie a little better. Marcus already knows that Charlie is a pro football player and he's starting to get Alzheimer's as he ages. Marcus decides to choose between either going to his football game or bring Charlie to the Hall of Fame at East Bonaventure University. Marcus ends up bringing him to the Hall of Fame at Charlie's University. It seems that Marcus cares about Charlie more than his family does.

I agree that when I first started reading the book, I thought it would be about some kid who moves to a new town, try's out for the football team, and isn't liked by most of the others. But it ended up being more than that. Marcus really stepped forward and showed the team what he can do, not only as a quarterback, but also as a cornerback. I think that practicing with Charlie has improved Marcus' playing ability and will benefit him in the long run.

Reaction to Pop
When I first started reading Pop, I thought it was just going to be the story of how a new kid, Marcus Jordan, tries out for the football team as an underdog without anyone on his side, like Troy Popovich, the arrogant quarterback, and him ending up proving everyone wrong when he shows the team how good he can be. But, the novel turned out to be more than just a football underdog story with the introduction of Charlie, a former NFL linebacker who has Alzheimer's disease from getting too many concussions during his career. Charlie gets Marcus in trouble multiple times with the police for harassing a hardware store owner, which causes Marcus to get charges against him. The problem is that blaming what happened on a man with Alzheimer's wouldn't sound believable. But, Marcus is able to pull it off from the help of Charlie's old friend Mac who helped Marcus prove both that Marcus was innocent and do what is best for Charlie even though it goes against what his family wants.
Overall, I enjoyed how the author kept the novel related to football while bringing in a new aspect, which was the result of repeated head trauma from football which caused Charlie's disease. Dealing with Charlie's issue becomes the main plot point of the novel which is not what I expected but very interesting.

1st Half of the Book
I am reading the book Pop, by Gordon Kormon. Right now, I am halfway through the book. I am glad I am not in Marcus' position. He's a new kid that practices football everyday in a park. A random stranger named Charlie starts appearing in this park. Charlie has gotten Marcus in trouble on two occasions. Marcus can't blame it on Charlie because he has Alzheimer's disease, and Charlie's family doesn't want anyone to know about it. If Marcus turned him in, everyone would find out. If I were in Marcus' position, I wouldn't know what to do. It's probably really hard for him to confess to commiting a crime that he didn't do.

First Half(Chapters 1-14)
When I first started reading Pop, by Gordon Korman, I thought this was going to be another story about a new kid working hard to play football and have all that hard work payoff in the end, but I quickly learned that was not the case. The first among many unexpected twists was the arrival of an extremely athletic middle aged man who decides to crash the teenage quarterback, Marcus Jordan's training session. They then develop a close bond due to their love of football and overall, the pop of a good tackle. Eventually the mystery behind Charlie get to be too much and Marcus googles his new training partner to learn he is a former NFL linebacker known as "The King of Pop". After some time, Charlie's training started to pay off as Marcus earned a spot at corner and fullback. In the eyes of most people, he was part of the team, but not to Troy Popovich, the Raiders' quarterback and Charlie's son. It wasn't until Marcus saw the panic in Troy and his sister Chelsea's eyes upon learning their father was missing that there was something severely wrong with Charlie. With some further research, Marcus realizes that Charlie is suffering from the disease Alzheimers, which is causing Charlie's memory to slowly deteriorate. Marcus than realizes that when Charlie calls him "Mac" it is not a nickname, but Charlie's best friend from his teenage years which Charlie believes he is still living. How will Marcus try to help Charlie and how will his search for the real Mac turn out? I am eager to find out.
finished the book
In the end Charlie did change Marcus's view of football. Marcus did become the quarterback after Troy quit the team. It was sad when Charlie killed himself. Over all the book was really good and I really liked it.
Second Post
When Charlie would go into different stores, he would take things without paying. I know Mrs. Popovich would pay for it later. The cashiers didn't try to stop him. Is this because he is a retired NFL player or is it because they know he has Alzheimer's? If they know he has Alzheimer's, I thought it was supposed to be a big secret.
Chapter 10-End
Marcus injured his shoulder playing with Charlie at three alarm park. After injuring his shoulder Marcus chooses not to practice with Charlie anymore. Marcus overhears Troy's sister Chelsea talking about how Charlie went missing. Marcus goes to three alarm park to see if he is there, he is not. Based on Charlie's memory problem Marcus finds out that Charlie has Alzheimer's which makes him think that he is the same age Marcus. Charlie is inducted into the hall of fame but his family doesn't think he is in the right condition so, Marcus plans to take Charlie to the induction. On the way there Marcus, Mac (Charlie's old friend), and Charlie talk about Charlie's college days to make him feel safe. They stop at a truck stop only to find that Charlie ran away. They find him hitchhiking in the street but then safely take him to his hall of fame induction. Chelsea sees Charlie on tv acting professional in front of everybody, as if he had nothing wrong with him. Police show up to take Charlie to a football game which is the biggest game of the season for Marcus's high school. They get the win on the game. On the final game of the season Marcus is the starting quarterback because Troy quit football. During the game Marcus sees Charlie tight rope walking on the ledge of the stadium. He died and his funeral was the next day at his house. As for Troy and Marcus their relationship is now okay.

My final post- end of book
Charlie's tragic death at the end of this story was one that I saw coming for a long time. Throughout the story, Charlie's disease gets progressively worse as time goes on and the author makes it clear through his actions that something terrible will eventually happen. His death comes at almost the worst possible time, during the final game of the second perfect season. The tragedy at the field caused the game to end early, and it ruined the DNA football team's chance at a second official perfect season. It was a tragic ending to a very well written novel.
First
When starting the book, we find out that our main character Marcus is trying out for the David Nathan Aldrich Raiders and makes the team, but is hated by most of the team especially Troy. Later on, Marcus finds out that Troy's dad is Charlie, a retired NFL linebacker. When Marcus found out that Charlie was Troy's dad, their relationship worsens, but the team slowly starts to like him more. The beginning of the book was okay because it had some interesting events.

When reading this book, we find out that Charlie, a retired NFL linebacker, has Alzheimer's. I did not understand why the family had taken so long to get some help for Charlie. The family had waited until the end of the book just to be put on the waiting list for the next room available in a retirement home. I think Charlie's family should have gotten help as soon as possible.

My second post
In the second haft of the book Marcus finds out that Charlie was a pro football player. He found out that Charlie was a linebacker that played both collage football and he played in the NFL. Later in the book he finds out that the intense hits pro football player give and receive can increase the chance of Alzheimer's. He then finds out that that is why Charlie acts like a teenager. when looking at his football history he finds his old collage website that shows that he will be inauguration into their hall of fame. Charlie's family deside it is a bad idea to bring Charlie to the inauguration. Steve bring him any way. After the inauguration Marcus is raced back to his raiders football team game to replace the quarterback. who heart his hand. During the game Charlie thinking he was playing football like when he was in high school so he climbed to the top of the stadium where a falcon was siting as he got to the top he lost his balanced were he fell to his death.

My Second Post~read up to chapter 23
Thus far the story has been surprisingly good. Although he ended up getting in trouble in the end, Marcus did a very noble thing to help Charlie get to the Homecoming game at EBU. Charlie may not even remember the massive ovation he received at the stadium, but it was still an incredible moment in his life that may be one of the few he remembers as the disease gets even worse. That's why I believe Marcus did the right thing by bringing him to the game. The one mistake he made was not telling the real Mac that Charlie wasn't supposed to be at the game. If Marcus told him, Mac would have better understood their situation, and I'm sure he would've agreed that it was the right thing to do. If Mac understood the magnitude of the situation he might have been able to prevent Charlie from running away. Instead, Charlie was brought in to the police station and Officer DeLuca almost had to arrest Marcus for kidnapping Charlie. It will be very interesting to see how Charlie's family reacts once Marcus returns home to Kennesaw.
JackM10, First
In the beginning part of the book something was wrong with Charlie right away. He broke a car window without paying, takes things from the stores without paying, and calls Marcus Mac when Marcus told him his name. I thought something was going to happen to Marcus and his football career, and him and Charlie would have to fix it. The beginning part of the book is okay so far. The things they do are interesting, but I think it's setting the stage for something to come later down the road.

Finished the Book
The book is about Marcus Jordan, a 16 year old boy who just moved to Kennesaw from Kansas. He meets a 54 year old man named Charlie in the park one day and they bond. Due to his Alzheimer's he has a warped reality. Charlie realizes that he went to college and played in the NFL but still believes that he is a teenager and that Marcus is his teenage friend Mac. I think that Marcus became friends with Charlie because he had no other friends in his new town. I knew that Charlie had at least played on a college level of football due to his size and athletic ability before it was revealed in the book, but I never caught on to his disease until Marcus found out.
For his own safety, I really feel that Charlie's disease should not have been kept a secret by his family. Even though Charlie did not want to go to the home, it was the best thing for him to keep him out of trouble and provide safety.
After reading the book, I was stunned that Charlie died so suddenly when he fell off of the stadium. Marcus never said in the book, but if it was me that took Charlie to the stadium against his family's will, I believe I would have felt very guilty.
I was also flabbergasted that Charlie died with his disease still a secret. I believe that if Charlie had lived longer, his secret would have been exposed eventually because his condition was progressing. It was also unexpected when Marcus and Troy made amends at Charlie's funeral.

this is for the first 9 chapters of pop. marcus seems to have met the father of the starting quarterback of the highschool team of the town he just moved to. the man was in the NFL and seems to be very immature even though he is 50. he broke a car window and left marcus to deal with it. the book is okay so far

Second Post
In the first 21 chapters Marcus and his friends try to help their friend Charlie. His problem is that he is doing poorly in his classes. His friends are trying to help him but he won't let them. He never had to ask for anything in his life because he was such a great football player at his school. Due to the fact that his skills were so fantastic in football, he felt like he never had to ask for help and really doesn't feel comfortable askin for it. Especially when he really needs it.
So far, I like the book. I like the book because it is a friend trying to help out another friend even though that friend dosen't want any help. He won't give up on him and will keep trying until he succeeds in school. I like when people never give up and I always try and give it my all, just like Marcus. This is why I can really relate to this book and really enjoy reading it.
I think it will end with Marcus finally helping Charile. This will pay off in the end and Charlie will finally know that asking for help can be a good thing, especially when you need it. My favorite chapter in the book is chapter 20, in chapter 20 Charlie runs away and Marcus runs out to find him and trys to get him home so they can talk about everything that makes him mad. Also It says that Marcus is a friend who helps people that struggle in life. Thats what I like the most, a friend helping out another no matter what it takes and no matter what the other friend says.

While reading Pop, before Marcus finds out that Charlie has Alzheimer's, I already guessed that Charlie had this sickness. I don't think the author had to wait so long to reveal the big secret. The one thing that did stand out to me is why the family did not want to get help for Charlie. I understand that they want privacy and he is still very young to get this sickness but getting some kind of help for Charlie was in his best interest.
My First Blog
While reading Pop I was expecting a story of a football player that had one play that changed his career. The however, results were totally opposite. In the book there is a kid named Marcus Jordan who just moved with is mom who was recently divorced from his dad. One of the things he did during the summer was to go to Three Alarm Park. Marcus would usually tie a picture frame to a tree and throw a football through it to practice his arm. One day during his practice a large man showed up on the field and intercepted one of Marcus's pases. That man's name was Charlie. Together they practiced throwing, catching, and tackling. One day during one of the sessions Marcus asked why did he liked football so much. Charlie said that he loves the pop. When tryouts came for the raiders high school football team Marcus didn't get off on the right foot with his team. Marcus met his new nightmare Troy, his soon to be girl friend Alyssa, and his good friend Ron. I loved the book so far. Especially how the author keeps suspense in each and every chapter by cutting off the solution to the problem or event.

My First Post
My first impression of the book was that it would be about a
football player and that something popped that changed his life and that person
was never the same again. What i read so far is that there is a boy named
Marcus Jordan who was killed on his motorcycle. Marcus plays football and he
is not afraid of anything. He can take a hit and continue playing without
feeling any pain. He will never back down, will never quite, and he will always
give it his all and won’t stop until the job is done. He gives everything he
does 110% and won’t stop until he feels like he has won. Marcus happens to be one of my favorite characters
in the book so far. He is someone who never runs from a problem, even if the
problem is too big for him to handle. I think what will happen is one day when
he doesn’t run away from a problem, than he will get really hurt. I think that
because he doesn’t turn away from this problem and gets hurt because of it then
it will change his attitude completely. I also think that this will then teach
him a lesson that he should sometimes walk away from certain situations that he faces in the book.
